Immunity

Rubella IgG Learn More

A rubella blood test detects antibodies that are made by the immune system to help kill the rubella virus. These antibodies remain in the bloodstream for years. The presence of certain antibodies means a recent infection, a past infection, or that you have been vaccinated against the disease. Antibodies are proteins your immune system makes to help fight infections and keep you from getting sick. They're targeted to specific germs, viruses, and other invaders. Your doctor can tell a lot from the type of antibodies that you have in your blood.

Measles IgG Learn More

A positive result on an IgM antibody test means you have a measles or mumps infection now or you had a recent infection. A positive result on an IgG antibody test means you are immune to measles or mumps because you had a vaccination or past infection. The presence of detectable IgG-class antibodies indicates prior exposure to the measles virus through infection or immunization. Individuals testing positive are considered immune to measles infection.

Varicella IgG Learn More

A single serologic IgG test can be used to determine if a person has antibodies to VZV from past varicella disease or who may be candidates for varicella-zoster immune globulin (VZIG). (The product available in the U.S. is VariZIG). A positive IgG ELISA result indicates that a person has antibodies to VZV either from past varicella disease or vaccination. This test cannot distinguish whether the antibodies were from a past episode of varicella or vaccination.

Mumps IgG Learn More

The presence of mumps-specific IgG indicates a recent or a prior exposure to mumps virus or mumps vaccine. Serologic tests cannot differentiate between an exposure to vaccine and an exposure to wild-type mumps virus. See question regarding utility of viral specimen for genetic analysis.

About this test and how it can help you

MMR infections with measles, mumps and rubella viruses are confined to humans and occur worldwide. All are spread primarily via the aerosol route. Each of the viruses exists as a single serotype. The MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine contains live, attenuated forms of all three viruses. Nearly all infected individuals will show signs of disease. There is only one serotype of measles and a single natural infection will give life-long protection. The main route of measles infection is via inhalation. Measles virus is highly contagious and the maximum period of contagiousness is the 2 to 3 days before onset of the rash. Varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes the illness also known as chicken pox.

If you had a vaccination for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella or were sick with any of these virus in the past, your body makes IgG antibodies to protect you against future infection, usually for the rest of your life. An IgG antibody test checks for these antibodies in your blood.
